'Saturday Night Live': Josh Hutcherson's Best Sketches

May 2024 · 2 minute read

Josh Hutcherson brought some Hunger Games-mania to this week’s installment of Saturday Night Live.

During his opening monologue, Hutcherson made fun of his character’s performance in the first film’s games, saying, “I play Peeta, the brave young hero who immediately gets hurt and has to be carried around for the rest of the movie.”

A Hunger Games-crazed Kate McKinnon — dressed as Elizabeth Banks‘ character, Effie Trinket — insisted SNL must host its own Games, going so far as to turn castmembers into tributes. Hutcherson wasn’t keen on the idea, and like Peeta, turned out to be weak. Cecily Strong injured him with a high five, and he insisted she carry him to the next sketch.

And what a wacky bunch of sketches they turned out to be. In one, Hutcherson brought his new girlfriend home for Thanksgiving. The weird twist? She was actually a turkey (Vanessa Bayer dressed up in a costume). Awkward.

In another, Hutcherson teamed up with Kenan Thompson and Jay Pharoah to play a subway dance troupe whose niche is working in crowded cars. But because of the confined space, the moves they performed aren’t very impressive.

Hutcherson also played an employee at the worst animal hospital in the world, where the crew routinely told its customers, “Your pet died.”

Ahead of the show, we’d hoped Hutcherson would play Marty McFly. Instead, he rocked out in an ’80s sketch in which his character spoke in sound bites from The Outfield’s “Your Love.” It was super-charming and super-weird.

SNL is in reruns next week. It’ll return Dec. 7 with host Paul Rudd and musical guest One Direction.
